💥 Quizlet: Competition and learning!
📌Today I am going to introduce you to a website Quizlet that I have been exposed to in my ICT classes and which I think will give language teachers a lot of inspiration. Specifically, teachers can use Quizlet to help their students learn the language, both in classroom sessions and when assigning homework afterwards. If you would like to explore it in person, please click here.
✍️【Using it in the classroom】
Firstly, teachers can use Quizlet to help students understand and remember words. By importing the words (or phrases) and their corresponding definitions to be learned within the lesson into two sides of cards, students can then learn them while reversing the cards.
Then, once the students have mastered the target words and phrases, the teacher can use Quizlet to create exciting class activities to test the students' learning. Specifically, Quizlet can set different questions based on the target knowledge and students need to answer them correctly on their own devices.
A very useful feature is that Quizlet allows the participating students to be divided into different groups and each group will be awarded points when they answer the question correctly. This will create a competition between the different groups and their scores will be displayed in real time on the teacher's computer, and the teacher can choose to synchronize the scoring images on the screen in the classroom, which may increase the motivation of the students to compete.
In the end, the first group to answer all the questions correctly will win.
During this whole process, the students not only use the fragmented time to fully learn the language knowledge on their own, but also to check it through a fun competition. This boosts their interest in learning, exercises their teamwork skills and stimulates the classroom atmosphere.
📖【Using it in after-class session】
Alternatively, teachers can use Quizlet to assign homework to the students. For example, teachers can create various types of exercise sets for students to complete independently after class to consolidate what they have learnt within the classroom while checking mastery.
‼️【Limitation】
Overall, Quizlet is a fully functional language learning aid website that helps teachers to enrich the classroom format, design test exercises to set homework, etc. However, it also has some limitations.
☝️Firstly, there are technical requirements: it can only be used if there is multimedia in the classroom and if the students have electronic devices.
✌️Secondly, the design of the pages is relatively simple, but at the same time relatively monotonous and uninteresting, and therefore may not be suitable for younger learners.
Of course, there are many more uses for Quizlet than those mentioned above that you could develop. Go and try it out!
Finally, here is a video instructing users on how to use Quizlet with ESL students. It has very detailed instructions on how to set up the different activities and is well worth watching.
I hope this blog has brought you some useful information and see you next time!
Hi Yutong, I'm happy that I learned something new from your blog! It is quiet good that Quizlet can be used also afterclass, I didn't know that before. Thank you for your blog that giving me a new way to think about my after-class assessment in the future! Your page is very clear and organization is good. Here I have some tiny suggestion that may be improved the blog a little bit. The color of the text is grey, do you think it would be better if we change it to black? (just my own opinion). The management of the pictures size can also be improved in the future I guess.
ReplyDeleteAnd also it would be better if you don't leave so many spaces at the end of the post. Overall, it is a nice bolg, you help me know more about Quizlet~
Nice job Yutong! I've had a general idea about Quizlet and how to use it after reading your post. And thanks for putting the direct video link at the end of the post. Also, LOVE the way you highlight the points! For me the layout coule be improved by putting the pictures in the middle of the page. :)
